Have you ever noticed how a good rain changes everything? The grass turns greener, the air smells fresh, and suddenly what looked dormant starts to come alive. That’s not just an observation about nature — it’s a picture God Himself uses to describe how His word works in our lives.

In a message rooted in Deuteronomy 32 and Isaiah 55, we’re reminded that God’s doctrine isn’t something to avoid or downplay. It’s the very thing designed to make us grow.

The Rain of God’s Word

In Deuteronomy 32:2, the Lord says:

“My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distill as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass.”

Notice the imagery. God doesn’t say His doctrine will hit like a hammer or crash like a wave. He says it will drop as the rain — gentle, consistent, life-giving. Rain doesn’t force the grass to grow; it creates the conditions where growth happens naturally. That’s how God’s word works in our hearts.

Why Doctrine Gets a Bad Rap

You’ve probably heard people say things like, “Doctrine divides,” or “I don’t want to get bogged down in doctrine — I just want to love people.” It’s a common sentiment, but it should make you pause and ask a simple question: Who would want to de-emphasize the doctrine of God?

It certainly wouldn’t be the Lord Himself. Additionally, Deuteronomy 32:4 describes Him as a God of truth, without iniquity, and just and right. His doctrine is an expression of His perfection. If someone is steering you away from studying what God says is just and right, it’s worth considering whose agenda that serves.

Showers Make Things Grow

Here’s where it gets practical. What happens when showers hit the grass? It grows.

Without rain, grass won’t grow. Neither will crops. Neither will we. We need the rain. We need the steady, soaking influence of God’s word to produce real growth in our lives — not just inwardly, but outwardly. Visible growth. Growth that bears fruit.

This is a simple but powerful point: if you want to bring forth, if you want to bud and multiply, you have to shower yourself in God’s word. Not occasionally. Not when it’s convenient. Consistently, the way rain falls on the grass.

God’s Ways Are Higher

Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

We sometimes think we know what’s best. We say things like, “I will never…” — and then life has a way of humbling us. But God’s ways are higher. His plan for our growth is better than anything we could engineer on our own.

The Word That Won’t Return Empty

Isaiah 55:10-11 ties it all together:

“For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it to bring forth and bud… So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth. It shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”

Just as rain and snow don’t return to the sky without doing their job, God’s word doesn’t go out without accomplishing its purpose. And what is that purpose? To bring forth. To bud. To grow. To multiply.

His word will prosper. The question is whether we’ll position ourselves to receive it.
